Lynn Houser wrote in the Sunday H-T:
“Not to be forgotten in the mix was the cramps suffered by Dee Davis. In the fourth quarter the Panther guard was fouled hard on a drive,. He waved off the trainers but needed a minute to get the circulation back in his leg. He stayed in the game but missed both free throws. After taking a seat on the bench to get the kinks worked out, Davis returned, only to cramp up again. He was able to play the last three minutes, but he was not able to move with his usual quickness.”
I can tell you exactly why Davis had those cramps — the team was drinking cokes at their 2pm team meal, instead of water — a simple case of dehydration leading to cramping. When Mo was football coach at South, his rule was nothing but water on game day, and lots of it. If anyone was caught drinking a coke, tea, coffee, etc., they didn’t play in that game. Mo wanted them getting off the team bus and running for the urinals, which indicated proper hydration. Some coaches prohibit nothing but water for drink for 48 hours before a game.
You could clearly see Davis wobbling on every pass he made — most of them too hard or too long (or too cute) — did you notice he had no magic in his moves the entire second half, even missing both his free throws. Everyone knows the success to free throw shooting is in the legs, and Davis had no legs in the second half. You hate to take him out of the game, but in retrospect, his legs cost us dearly.
Additionally, Holmes kept switching from zone (effective) to man-to-man defense (ineffective). It seemed every time we went man defense, they easily drove straight to the basket. Which is what they did on their last play of the game to go ahead.
Also, from 3 minutes left to the end, Holmes kept signaling to spread the offense, yet on six straight possessions South couldn’t help themselves and tried to get a basket inside — all leading to turnovers. I guess sometimes with high school kids, you need a two by four to get your point across. Holmes must of left his at home.
All in all, still a great year and a great team.
A word about Jeffersonville, the community of basketball fans: The Jeff fans who I talked to after the game were the most gracious winners I have ever encountered. Some told me how bad they felt for me. (I guess I looked like I was about to cry.) They tried to encourage me by saying how good we’d be next year. Some offered up the opinion that we got some bad calls that cost us the game. One 93 year old lady (and her 98 year old husband), told me they’d been following Jeff basketball for over 80 years, and had suffered many, many disappointments. They encouraged me to keep my spirits up, because “regardless of this outcome, I still think Bloomington is the better team.” This was all a very good lesson to me — never be arrogant in your victory, but always be a humble, gracious winner. Thank you Jeffersonville fans for that lesson. It would be fitting to see all these nice people rewarded with a state championship.
