Glass Houses–Storming the Court? 01-19-20

Glass Houses

Indiana has now doubled their Big Ten victory output from last year with their victory over Minnesota Sunday 81-78 in overtime.

Don't go breaking VJ when you storm the court

Indiana again romped out to double digit leads in each half only to be pegged back, but unlike the last home game against Illinois, the Hoosiers found a way to win.

What have we learned?

5 is better than 2.

All for one and all for all. Notice there's more than 3 of them...

What does this mean?

When Indiana gets contributions down the line, and not just from Jones and Watford, they are more successful.  Better passing equals better shooting percentages.  More people scoring mean less pressure on Jones and Watford to make every shot.  More people rebounding means more rebounds which means less possessions for the opponent.  All who played on Sunday had a hand in the victory.

Unfortunately, with young teams, this will not happen every game.  That’s why we need to enjoy these victories.  We need to enjoy that they are finding a way to win.  We need to enjoy the times they listen to their coaches and gut it out for 45 minutes.

But, they’re still young and inexperienced and that’s not always enjoyable.

They haven’t learned to kill off opponents nor games.

They forget what got them the lead.  Movement.  Penetration.  Hustle.

They forget to keep attacking and end up playing conservatively.

They haven’t learned to keep throwing punches.  They haven’t learned when to push and when to pull back.

But they’ll learn.

They’ll have to.  They miss too many free throws to stop punching and trying to “waste’ time just turns into bad shot selection.

Indiana moves to 2-3, tied with Purdue for 7th in the league.

Was it necessary to rush the court afterward?  Probably not, but a win is a win and with the meat of the schedule coming up next week…let’s just enjoy this one.

And they way the won is just as important as the victory itself.

I think some people forget just how few good victories the current student at IU has seen. Imagine if you are just a sophmore on campus. I don’t blame them for storming the court, at least they are showing some passion and I don’t understand why it bothers some people. I guess they think we are above celebrating a victory unless it is against an elite team? I say storm the court if you want, just don’t hurt any of our guys!
