Glass Houses

Easy on the cookies, fat man...

Easy on the cookies, fat man...

Only 7 shopping days left, kids, before the fat man in the red suit (no, not RMK, he doesn’t do red anymore) breaks and enters your home, apartment or whatever, eats all your sweets and leaves you a pile of unnecessary socks, sweaters and underwear under your Christmas tree.

To Play or Not to Play, That is the Question

It’s late December and the Colts are undefeated again as they travel to Florida (excellent idea) to take on a Jacksonville team that is fighting for a playoff spot.  Past games between these two teams have been close, hard-hitting fixtures and tonight should be no different.

Except that this time, the Colts have nothing to play for.  That’s right, nothing.

Who cares if the Colts go undefeated?

New England did this two years ago, so hardly any new ground being broken here, plus the Saints are also in this same boat at 13-0.

The only thing any Colt fan should care about is winning a Super Bowl.  That’s what makes a team great, winning championships.

Ask the Atlanta Braves. Team of the 90’s?  Yer havin’ a laugh…(Yankees 96, 98, 99 including beating Atlanta twice)

Ask the Utah Jazz.

Not playoff apperances.  Not home field advantages.  Not conference championships (right, Andy Reid?)

The problem for the Colts is that they don’t have a competitive game that means anything until the second week of the playoffs (they have a bye being the number one seed) against a team who is fresh off a win from the previous week.

Hardly sounds a reward for being undefeated.

Big 10 Plus One Plus Another?

First it was Penn State in 1990.

Now, almost twenty years later (is that right?) it’s time for another assessment about expanding the league.

In 12-18 months from now, the Big Ten presidents will decided if they are to expand the league to a 12th team.

Why 12?

Easy, money.

More money from 8 additional home football games, plus the TV  baby of a conference championship game.

More money from television advertising as new markets can be developed as the Big Ten owns 49% of the Big Ten Network.

Does this automatically mean expansion?  Probably.  Where else is the extra revenue going come from?  Exactly.

If you don’t grow, you die, so the choice is not that hard.

The hard choice is which school to add.

Which school makes the most sense then?

Missouri?

Texas?

Syracuse?

Pitt?

Notre Dame again?–maybe not.  Again.

What say you?
